T Noie: A Small but Liberating Residential House

A Unique Design by Katsutoshi Sasaki

The T Noie is a residential house designed by Katsutoshi Sasaki, offering a small yet liberating living space. Inspired by the concept of narrow houses with added height, this design provides a sense of spaciousness and comfort. With its high windows and spiral arrangement, the T Noie creates a unique and inviting atmosphere.

This residential house stands out with its distinctive features and strengths. The T Noie consists of two 1.55m wide spaces connected by a 50mm thick T-shaped structure in the center. This design allows inhabitants to experience both intimacy and a shared space, despite being physically apart. The simplicity of the composition offers an ambivalent experience, while the high windows fill the interior with beautiful natural light throughout the day. Additionally, the 55mm floor blurs the line between architecture and furniture, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

The realization of the T Noie design incorporates advanced technology and craftsmanship. The posts are made of thin laminated rice pine, measuring 50mm in width, and are joined to the beams to form the T-shaped structure. The floorboards, made of 55mm local cypress, add to the natural and warm ambiance of the house.

Designed with careful consideration of technical specifications, the T Noie features 50 x 700mm columns, 50 x 450mm beams, and 55mm floorboards. These specifications ensure the structural integrity and durability of the house.

By applying the T Noie design, individuals with small sites or limited budgets can enjoy a comfortable living environment. This design proposal opens up the possibility of having a well-designed house in any country or region.

The T Noie project began in Toyota City, Japan, in May 2014 and was completed in January 2018. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to determine the minimum dimensions required for each room. The result was the establishment of two 1.55m rooms with a 700mm depth structure and storage between them.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, the T Noie design challenges stereotypes and redefines narrow spaces. The combination of length, natural light, and window placement creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, contrary to common beliefs in Japan. This design showcases the importance of thoughtful window design and its impact on the overall living experience.

The T Noie is not only a remarkable residential house but also the architect's own residence, serving as a testament to the effectiveness of the design. With its small yet liberating space, the T Noie offers a unique living experience that combines intimacy and shared areas.

The T Noie design by Katsutoshi Sasaki has received recognition for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that exemplify resourcefulness, technical skill, and contributions to improving the quality of life.
